Film as a Form of Writing: Quinn Latimer Talks to Akram Zaatari
‘It is a film, a thought that took the form of an artwork. As with most of my work, it is made for time; it is both a testimony of where I come from and a mark I care to leave for the future—again as thought, not as data or records. Let’s call it alternative writing that uses the form of letters.'
'Film is a form of writing and films can be letters in the direct sense, in pre-Skype times, or in the poetic sense, as in Chris Marker's "Sans Soleil". In the 1970's when communication between different parts of Lebanon was difficult, people relied on audiotape recordings to communicate with each other. And later they used video. But putting all this aside, yes, I do like calling a film a 'letter', partly in allusion to Camus addressing an imagined German friend, and partly to stress film as a tool for writing '
